The Baseball Pitcher's Mental Game: The Yips, the Spiral, and the Way Back

Three pitchers. Three eras. One affliction that none of them saw coming and none of them could think their way out of.

In 1973, Steve Blass — a World Series hero two seasons earlier — suddenly could not throw a strike. In 2000, Rick Ankiel, a 21-year-old with what scouts called a generational arm, unraveled on a postseason mound in front of a national audience. In 2013, Daniel Bard, a Red Sox flamethrower who'd touched 100 mph, lost the strike zone and didn't throw another major league pitch for seven years.

Their stories are the most documented cases of what baseball calls the yips — and they are the clearest window available into what actually happens in an overhand pitcher's nervous system when the thing he's done a hundred thousand times suddenly stops working. They're also, in Bard's case, proof that it's not permanent. This is the baseball pitcher's mental game, told through the people who lived its hardest version.

The Godfather: Steve Blass

Steve Blass threw the complete-game seventh game that clinched the 1971 World Series for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The following season he won 19 games, posted a 2.48 ERA, made the All-Star team, and finished runner-up for the National League Cy Young Award. By any measure he was one of the dominant pitchers in the game.

Then came 1973. His ERA ballooned to 9.85. He walked 84 batters in 88 and two-thirds innings while striking out only 27. His wins-above-replacement that season remains the worst of any pitcher in the modern era. He had no injury. He felt physically fine. And — the detail that makes the case so instructive — he could pitch well on the sidelines but could not do it under game conditions.

The Pirates tried everything. Coaches studied film of his arm angle, foot placement, and grip, and prescribed mechanical adjustments. None of it worked, because none of it was the problem. Blass described the experience in terms that no biomechanical analysis could touch: his brain, he said, simply stopped talking to his arm.

He was out of baseball by 1975. The condition was named after him — "Steve Blass Disease" became the term applied to any athlete who suddenly, inexplicably loses the ability to perform a basic skill. He went on to spend more than three decades as a beloved Pirates broadcaster, which is its own kind of lesson: the affliction defined a season, not the man.

The Monster: Rick Ankiel

The Ankiel case is the one most baseball families know, because it happened in the brightest possible light. On October 3, 2000, the 21-year-old started Game 1 of the National League Division Series for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Atlanta Braves. He'd gone 11-7 that season and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting. The first two innings went fine.

Then, in the third inning, it arrived. Ankiel later wrote that a single wayward pitch staggered to the backstop and everything changed. He threw five wild pitches in that inning — something not seen in a postseason game since 1908. Manager Tony La Russa gave him another start in the NLCS against the Mets. It happened again: more walks, more balls to the backstop. The following season he walked 25 batters in just 24 innings.

Ankiel called it "the monster." In his 2017 autobiography, written with Tim Brown, he was unflinching about how far it drove him — at one point, he has said he drank vodka before a start to quiet the panic. The Cardinals tried everything the Pirates had tried with Blass a generation earlier, even sending him down to rookie ball. Nothing restored the pitcher.

What makes Ankiel's story extraordinary is the second act. Rather than leave the game, he rebuilt himself as an outfielder, spent nearly three years in the minors learning to hit, and returned to the majors in 2007 — homering in his first game back. He hit 25 home runs the following season. The generational arm that betrayed him on the mound made him an elite defensive outfielder. He is one of the only players in modern history to have a full career as both a pitcher and a position player.

The Pattern Across All Three

None of these pitchers had an injury. All of them could perform on the sidelines but not in games. All of them were subjected to extensive mechanical analysis that didn't help. That combination — clean in the bullpen, lost in the game, mechanically sound on film — is the signature of a state problem, not a mechanics problem.

Why the Overhand Delivery Is Specifically Vulnerable

The yips appear in many sports, but the overhand baseball delivery has produced the most famous and most severe cases. There's a neurological reason for that.

The overhand pitching motion is one of the most complex, highest-velocity coordinated movements in all of sport — a sequential kinetic chain that accelerates the arm to speeds the human body isn't obviously built to survive, all while demanding millimeter-level release-point precision. A movement that complex and that fast is necessarily run by the procedural memory system, below conscious awareness. There is no time to consciously direct it. The arm has to be on autopilot.

That's exactly what makes it fragile under threat. When the amygdala flags a pitching situation as dangerous — a playoff start, a national audience, a recent public failure — it triggers the stress cascade: cortisol, adrenaline, muscle tension, and crucially, an intrusion of conscious monitoring into a movement that cannot tolerate it. The pitcher starts thinking about his arm path, his release, his grip. And the moment conscious attention takes over an automated movement that complex, the movement degrades. The harder he tries to consciously control it, the worse it gets — because conscious control is the problem, not the solution.

This is why "just relax" and "just throw strikes" are useless instructions for a pitcher in the spiral. He's not failing to try. He's trying too hard, at the level of conscious control, and the trying is what's breaking the automatic system. The Way Back: Daniel Bard

If Blass and Ankiel show how the affliction ends a pitching career, Daniel Bard shows that it doesn't have to.

Bard broke through with the Boston Red Sox in 2009 and was, by 2010, one of the most fearsome relievers in baseball — a 1.93 ERA over nearly 75 innings, throwing 100 mph. Then, over the next three seasons, his control eroded. By 2013 he was effectively out of the major leagues. He bounced around the minors, and in 2017 he retired, taking a role as a player mentor with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

What Bard said about that period names the deepest cost of the pitching yips — and it maps precisely onto what STRYV calls the identity dimension. When the one thing you're supposed to be elite at gets taken from you, he said, you kind of lose your identity. Every time he put a baseball in his hand, there was anxiety.

The comeback was improbable. After two years away from playing, in his mid-thirties, Bard signed a minor league deal with the Colorado Rockies in February 2020, made the Opening Day roster, and pitched his way to the National League Comeback Player of the Year award — his first major league appearances in over seven years. Two seasons later he saved 34 games as the Rockies' closer.

The detail that matters most for any family reading this: the recovery came in significant part from addressing the mental side, and from time away that broke the cycle of repeated failure under pressure. Not from a new grip. Not from a mechanical fix. From conditioning the state the mechanics were being executed in — which is the entire premise of what STRYV does.

What This Means for a Developing Pitcher

Most pitchers will never experience a full clinical yips collapse like these three. But the milder version of the same mechanism — losing the zone in a big inning, the release point drifting after a bad outing, the tempo accelerating when the scout shows up — is extraordinarily common, and it runs on the identical neurological pathway. The famous cases are the extreme end of a spectrum that touches nearly every competitive pitcher at some point.

The practical lessons from the documented cases:

Mechanical fixes don't solve state problems. Three organizations with three of the best pitching staffs in baseball threw their full mechanical resources at Blass, Ankiel, and Bard. It didn't work because the mechanics were never the problem. If a pitcher is clean in the bullpen and lost in games, more mechanical instruction will not help and may make it worse by adding conscious monitoring.

The earlier the intervention, the better. All three cases were allowed to compound — repeated public failures, each one strengthening the threat association, before anyone addressed the actual mechanism. The neural pathway gets more entrenched with every reinforced repetition. A developing pitcher showing early signs of the pattern is far more addressable than one who has lived in it for two seasons.

The identity piece is central. Bard's own words — losing the thing you're elite at means losing your identity — point at why this is so devastating and why generic confidence work fails. The recovery requires rebuilding a competitive self-concept that isn't fused to the very performance that's collapsing. That's identity-level work, not a pep talk.

It is not a character flaw, and it is not permanent. These were three of the most competitive, talented arms of their respective eras. The yips found them anyway, because it's a neurological event, not a measure of toughness. And Bard's comeback — along with Ankiel's reinvention — proves the affliction does not have to be the end of the story.
